How Online Marketing Works

Online marketing is a necessary aspect of marketing. For both large and small businesses, online marketing has become a priority. Online marketing encompasses many different types of reaching customers through the internet, email, and mobile phones. It uses the internet as a medium for both collecting information about customers and for communicating a company’s brand and products.

For marketing professionals, online marketing involves adapting to new technologies and new ways of communication. SEM and SEO are related in that they try to attract users to websites by ensuring that those websites have high rankings in search engine results. SEM differs in that it involves paying for high rankings or inclusion. SEO, on the other hand, inserts specific key words into the content of websites so that when people search using those key words, the websites will appear. Both of these methods are now standard elements of online marketing.

Online marketing also includes banner advertising, pop up windows, and advertisements inserted among the text. Like traditional advertising, businesses pay to have their advertisements visible on the internet through these methods. Internet users have become used to seeing advertisements along the top and sides of many search engines and other websites.

Social media marketing is another form of online marketing that is becoming increasingly popular. Social media marketing is integrating marketing with social media. Social media sites are the places that people connect online, so they are natural sites to spread the word about businesses and products. Small businesses can attract customers through social media sites by investing time in creating contacts. Friends talk to each other about businesses and products they like, so that businesses gain greater visibility and a positive reputation among users.

A challenge for online marketing has been the prevalence and power of online review sites. Any internet user can post their experience with a product or service. Anybody can read these posts, so that negative comments have a potentially enormous impact on the company’s ability to attract new customers. This makes it difficult for public relations to monitor and control how a company is discussed.
